Once Upon a Time...

They found love and lost it before Pacey and Joey were even friends...

For at least a year, while the story of Dawson and Joey was unfolding, another love story was playing out behind the scenes!

Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes sparked while their characters sparred. Little is known about their affair but they both speak of it, and each other, with great reverence.

While Katie seems to have found a new love in actor Chris Klein, Joshua has not had a serious public relationship since their break up and is reputed to be quite the ladies man. Following here is their own story, told in their own words.

From the earliest stages the two kept their new love private...

In YM magazine Dawson's Creek creator Kevin Williamson interviewed Katie. Katie said she was dating someone and it was obvious Kevin knew who the lucky young man was.

Kevin asked, "So whom are you dating?"

Katie replied, "Nice try. Subtle. You know, the way you kinda just slipped it through with the movie stuff."

"If you don't tell me whom you're dating, I'm gonna create a scandal and tell everyone you're Leonardo DiCaprio's love slave and pregnant with his child."

"That scandal would work in my favor."

"You know I know whom you're dating and could easily slip and spill the beans."

"And I could easily slip with a little information of my own regarding a certain someone you've been caught with."

"So. What's your favorite food?"

"Jelly beans and cookie dough."

He also asked her about her most romantic date. She never admits who it is but it isn't hard to guess, is it?

"One time I got caught in a rainstorm with somebody, and we were dancing in the street. It was pretty romantic."

Kevin later asked, "Have you ever made the first move with a guy?"

"Um lets just say that I've made it known to that person that my feelings for him went past friendship," explained Katie.

Josh mentioned the same incident in an article in Jane magazine years later:

"Before the show was even on the air, she asked me out," he says. "It was the first time I was ever tracked down by a beautiful woman. Life was good."

They spoke so little of their relationship but when they do? It's always glowingly.

Katie in another magazine interview:

[Josh] was my first love, and it was something so incredible and indescribable that I will treasure it always. He's now one of my best friends. It's weird, it's almost like a real-life Dawson-and-Joey type thing!

From Jane magazine:

Josh and Katie dated for about eight months right when Dawson's went on the air in '98. They ended up splitting because, as Josh says, their lives were "heading in opposite directions." But Josh is still a big booster for Katie: "In the beginning, it was breathtaking to watch. She was new at acting and completely unselfconscious. I'm still continually in awe of her."

Once Pacey and Joey became a couple, the obvious question was the impact it must have on the actors, knowing as we do that they were once very much in love.

Interviewer after interviewer wanted to know the details. This from a magazine interview:

Is it hard to work together now that you've broken up?
(Katie does her best imitation of calm.) "No. We're great friends. We did date. We fell in love. And I love him and now we have a friendship, which is nice. (She looks pointedly out the window.) So, isn't it pretty out today? (It's raining.)

From another magazine interview Katie conducted, she was asked about kissing her ex in front of the cameras all day:

"Maybe there's a hint of realism?" she offers cautiously. "It's been such a long time since we dated. I guess the audience can read into it whatever they want. It's such different circumstances for all four people involved. I guess if Pacey and Joey dated the first season, there would be a more clear indication of what's going on between us. But it's just so far from that."

Now, years after their brief, shining star has reportedly burnt out, they are inexplicably closer than ever.

Fan and extras accounts are all over the net, telling tales of the two and their adorable friendship.

One magazine article recounts, "[Katie] tells me that while she and Josh were filming a kissing scene earlier that day, Josh had bitten her as a joke. "So I bit him back," she says grinning."

Katie has spoken out about how generous Josh is with his talent and his advice, given that he is a veritable veteran at his young age. Josh, for his part, never ceases to go on about Katie's assets.

From an Aussie magazine: "Katie is like this glorious creature, and she's just taking her first steps out into life!" he says. Like us, Joshua thinks the best is probably yet to come. "It's frankly an honor to be able to watch her as she learns and grows."

Moreover, life in Wilmington might be a bit emptier for one without the other. They are often spotted out around town dining and shopping and going to movies.

Josh told US magazine: "All week long I felt like Josh instead of Pacey," he says. "It wasn't until Katie showed up that the energy came right back. When Michelle and James were there, the four of us fit right back together. That's why we're so at ease with each other in front of the camera. It's the same person you were talking to before the camera came on."

In another interview regarding the return from summer break he said, "She's gotten more beautiful over the summer. I don't know how. She's going from girl to woman. Wait until you meet her, that's when you fall in love."
